EMDR Trauma Therapy
At Elument, our clinicians are trained in psychedelic psychotherapy as well as more traditional psychotherapy. We utilize evidence-based therapy to help our clients on their path towards self-compassion, reconnection, and hope. EMDR is one of the tools that has been immensely helpful for so many of our clients in their trauma therapy. EMDR helps clients move through their past trauma towards a place of safety, security, and confidence. We’d be honored to walk with you on your journey towards trauma resolution.
what is EMDR?
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) has been used for decades in helping people process and heal from traumatic experiences. Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR focuses on using bilateral stimulation, usually through eye movements or alternative sounds, to conceptually activate the part of your brain that reprocesses memories. By doing this, your system can bring healing to the parts of you holding on to past trauma. The stored trauma reduces or resolves any stored charge, which means that we’re able to move through life free from the triggers related to that trauma.
EMDR began use as a therapeutic treatment for PTSD, but it has since been shown to help with anxiety, depression, phobias, self-compassion, connection with others, and interpersonal relationships. Trauma has a wide and often deep effect on us, so getting to the root of it and resolving it can have a widespread and significant impact in a lot of areas of your life.
EMDR has a general eight-step process which includes getting to know you and your system, processing past trauma, and instilling a positive belief. By reprocessing the stuck trauma, EMDR has allowed our clients to gain new perspectives and emotional relief, ultimately leading to higher life-satisfaction.
is EMDR right for me?
Just about everyone can benefit from EMDR, but some can benefit more than others. EMDR may be a good fit for you if you're struggling with past trauma, anxiety, depression, or other distressing memories that still bring discomfort to think about in the present day. It can be particularly helpful for clients who feel stuck with traditional therapy or haven’t found the resolution they’ve been looking for with other approaches.
If you're ready to address the underlying origins of a lot of present-day discomfort and want a treatment approach that goes beyond simply talking, EMDR could be a powerful tool for you. Our trained therapists are happy to have a conversation to hear more about you and talk about if EMDR seems like a good fit.
the EMDR Process
1. History taking
2. Preperation
3. Assessment
4. Desensitization
5. Installation
6. Body scan
7. Closure
8. Re-evaluation
Each of these steps are designed to help you get the most out of the process, as well as support you along the way.
When we start the intervention or active part of EMDR, sessions are typically 50-90 minutes. They usually start with a short check-in, then flow into reprocessing of a past trauma. Every client’s system processes a little differently, but it often leads to new memories, thoughts, somatic responses, and/or cognitions.
