The recent death of Matthew Perry has sparked discussions around ketamine, particularly its safety and its role in therapeutic settings. While details surrounding Perry’s passing are still emerging, it’s important to clarify the distinctions between recreational and therapeutic use of ketamine and discuss safe practices. I want to clarify the safety and efficacy of ketamine when administered in a structured, professional environment, emphasizing the rigorous standards upheld by our clinic.
Let’s establish some things before moving forward. I was a fan of Friends and enjoyed Matthew Perry’s character and acting. He also made some decisions historically, and surrounding his death, that were informed by addiction. At Elument, we deeply empathize with our clients and believe we’re all doing the best we can in the present moment, whether we’re getting an achievement award at work or struggling with addiction. We also acknowledge that our addictions, past trauma, triggers, and other aspects of our personalities can have outcomes that can be harmful to ourselves and others. Part of our work is to help clients connect with their innate ability to heal, regulate, and move towards a more balanced life. All that said, let’s establish some facts:
Ketamine has a couple different therapeutic approaches. At Elument, we utilize Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP). KAP integrates ketamine administration with psychotherapy – providing both therapeutic and medical oversight. During KAP sessions, our highly trained therapists are with the client the entire time, providing support, reflections, processing, and clinical oversight. Medical staff administer ketamine, chart and track vitals, and are available throughout the session. The therapeutic setting and real-time support make it a holistic treatment, addressing both the chemical and psychological aspects of mental health and wellness.
Conversely, traditional ketamine (also known as ketamine infusions), are typically conducted in a medical setting without the presence of a therapist. The focus is on the biochemical effects of ketamine, which can rapidly alleviate symptoms of depression and anxiety, although the benefits tend to be temporary. However, this approach lacks the therapeutic context, support, and oversight provided in KAP.
For Matthew Perry, the original use was the latter, traditional ketamine. There are some inherent issues and limitations with traditional ketamine/ketamine infusions, however it can be done in a medically safe environment, dosing, and approach.
With Matthew Perry, it appears he didn’t have both the appropriate therapeutic and medical containers for his ketamine use. In addition, he didn’t have a physically safe space.
Ketamine in a therapeutic context requires an appropriate environment where dosages are carefully monitored and patients are supported by trained professionals. In our clinic, we have protocols, systems, and safeguards in place.
Recent media coverage, including the discussion surrounding Matthew Perry's death, may cause some to question the safety of ketamine therapy. It's essential to distinguish between the therapeutic use of ketamine and its misuse. Ketamine, just like any other medicine, when administered improperly or abused, can indeed be dangerous. We can take Tylenol as an example. It can be dangerous when used incorrectly, responsible for approximately 500 deaths/year in America. That said, it’s considered ‘safe’ enough to be sold over the counter. With ketamine, in a clinical setting with proper oversight, it is a safe and effective treatment. To highlight, this is part of why it’s used with children in hospitals.
Ketamine therapy holds significant promise for growth, transition, and healing. However, its success and safety are dependent on the environment in which it is administered. At our clinic, we are committed to providing ketamine therapy in a safe and effective way. We understand the concerns that may arise from recent discussions in the media, and we want to reassure our clients that their well-being is our top priority. With our training, experience, and strict adherence to ethical guidelines, we don’t take half measures when it comes to providing high quality, ethical, and supported ketamine therapy.
As the conversation around ketamine continues, it’s essential to approach the topic with both openness and caution. By choosing a provider that prioritizes safety, ethical practices, and professional expertise, clients can experience the full benefits of ketamine therapy without undue risk. We are here to guide you on that journey, with a commitment to your mental health and safety at every step.
